A recent study carried out at Barnsley Hospital National Foundation Trust has shown that homeopathic treatment can offer significant benefits for patients suffering with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a debilitating condition causing muscle and joint pain & weakness which often leads to poor sleep, fatigue and depression. Many sufferers are unable to work and live independently with orthodox medical treatment having little to offer besides pain killers and anti-depressants.
This three-year pilot study found that homeopathy had a positive effect on ‘quality of life’ measures such as tiredness and mood with a small effect on pain levels. The trial included 47 patients with a medical diagnosis of fibromyalgia. These patients were randomly split into two groups, one receiving usual conventional care and the other group receiving usual care plus homeopathy. Following completion of the trial questionnaires were completed and those patients in the group treated with homeopathy showed a greater reduction in fatigue, tiredness on waking and pain than those receiving usual care only.
The research was initiated by registered homeopaths Jackie Raw & Clare Waters and also involved consultant rheumatologist Dr Ade Adebajo of the Rheumatology Department of Barnsley Hospital. Dr Adebajo said “I had no views about homeopathy before this study, but the results suggest greater symptom relief for those who received homeopathic treatment. Now the methodology has been proven, it seems important to conduct a larger trial to see if the findings can be replicated.
A growing number of private health insurance companies now cover the cost of a homeopathic consultation. The following companies recognise homeopaths without GP referral:
